A 22-day , 4,500-mile journey through the heart of the American East—from natural hot springs and legendary music cities to historic national parks and coastal escapes.
The Grand Route
We started our road trip heading north from Texas through Arkansas and Tennessee, exploring the rich musical heritage of Memphis and Nashville before diving into Kentucky’s natural underground adventures. From there, we swung south through Atlanta for the World of Coca-Cola, before wrapping up the journey in Florida with a dose of Disney magic and coastal sun.
The Home of Elvis Presley
The estate was built for ultimate leisure, packed with incredible amenities—a tennis court, pool, shooting range, and an expansive car collection. Reflecting on his life, standing at the center of the world’s vortex as a cultural icon comes with both extraordinary influence and immense weight. It left me feeling both envious and, in a way, deeply content. At this stage in my life, I still genuinely enjoy the gradual, step-by-step process of reaching my goals, rather than taking on the heavy mantle of commanding a realm just to indulge in its luxuries.
Pushing Back Against Constraints
Visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and reading through the history of the Civil Rights Movement was a profoundly moving experience. None of us are ever truly unconstrained—we are bound by physical laws, social structures, and systemic forces. Yet history proves that societal constraints are not fundamental constants; they can be challenged and rewritten. It served as a powerful reminder that human progress requires continuous work to resist the natural, sloppy inclination toward equilibrium and passive decay.
Immense respect for those who stood up to bend the arc of history.
Deep into Mammoth Cave
Entering Mammoth Cave was easily one of the highlights of our trip. Descending into the cool, dark passages—which hover at a crisp 14 C° year-round—made for the ultimate subterranean hike. It’s fascinating to trace the history here: long before it became a protected National Park, early 19th-century miners navigated these pitch-black depths guided only by flickering oil lamps to extract saltpetre for gunpowder. Standing in these massive, ancient hollows gives you a profound appreciation for both natural geology and human endurance.
History, Falconry, and Hidden Bunkers at The Greenbrier
Spending the 4th of July at The Greenbrier was a perfect mix of summer leisure, great company, and surprising history. Between taking some genuinely incredible freshly baked biscuits, taking a fascinating class on falconry and bird training, and spending quality downtime with friends playing Mecha Chameleon, the holiday flew by.
We also toured the resort’s famous Cold War fallout shelter—a once-secret underground bunker designed for Congress. Walking through its stark, pristine white corridors felt eerily like stepping straight into a Black Mirror set; I couldn’t help but reflect on how surreal—and mind-numbingly boring—it would have been to actually live through an extended lockdown inside those sterile walls.
Culinary Perfection & Farm Life at Blackberry Farm
Our time at Blackberry Farm was pure enjoyment, easily centered around some of the best food I’ve ever tasted—including without a doubt the single best steak of my life.
Cruising around the estate’s rolling hills in our little golf cart was an absolute blast, taking us from horseback riding through scenic trails to peaceful kayaking on the water.
As our server delightfully reminded us, “Nobody leaves Blackberry Farm hungry,” and they certainly made good on that promise. Between the endless stream of world-class meals, outdoor activities, and general chilling, it was an unforgettable blend of relaxation and top-tier hospitality.
World of Coca-Cola
Stopped by the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta to check out the exhibits. Even with crowds of people flocking to the tasting lounge to try all the new and international soda flavors, I didn’t bother experimenting—I came strictly for Diet Coke and left perfectly satisfied.
The Grand Finale: Disney World
We wrapped up our journey at Disney World, and while the shows and events were classic Disney magic, even with Lightning Lane fast passes, the endless waiting was a real test of patience.
Mentally, it was a massive sacrifice—given the choice, I’d much rather spend a full day in deep, uninterrupted focus, pouring my energy into meaningful scientific progress. The only realistic scenario where I’d put myself through this again is if I ever have a daughter. But despite the mental tax, seeing my girlfriend genuinely enjoy every moment made it all worthwhile, bringing a wonderful trip to a heartening close.
Returning to the Horizon & Houston
Stepping away and completely unplugging was a wonderful, necessary reset. Yet as the final miles ticked away on the drive home, I felt a familiar spark returning—an eager pull to dive back into reading, research papers, and the deep joy of scientific discovery. I’m deeply grateful to have experienced this unforgettable journey before closing my American chapter and setting off for France.
Every journey must eventually reach its endpoint, but I leave it energized. Here’s to the path ahead: may the things we love and the knowledge we seek always be earned through our own continuous effort.
